Colorado River Oasis, Ehrenberg, AZ - February 25 to March 1, 2011

February 28th post:  The weather is warming and we've enjoyed 4 days of free stay at Colorado River Oasis RV Resort.  There's very little to do here.  Ehrenberg is a very small community who's main attraction is the Flying J gas station and store.  Across the river is Blythe, California which is a little larger and is not the ghost town that Ehrenberg is but isn't much compared to what we're used to.  I did find a couple of items that we needed at a K Mart there.

We listened to the sales pitch by Western Horizons today. They're one of many in a growing RV resort system that sells memberships.  There's usually an initial 'buy in' amount in the thousands, an annual  'maintenance fee' of a few hundred dollars, and then a promise of very low nightly rates at hundreds of RV parks. While these sales pitches are always tedious, at least this salesman did not insult or bully as much as we had expected.  Western Horizons actually has a pretty good offer that, over time, is pretty cost effective but I'm not ready to spend the 'up front' money at this point.  Tomorrow we'll move on to the Parker strip area, about 50 miles north of here, to listen to a similar sales pitch from Colorado River Adventures.  We'll use their park, Emerald Cove Resort, located on the banks of the Colorado River for a day or two but if the sales pitch is too disrespectful we'll probably move on early.  DRW

February 25th post:   We got up this morning to start preparations to depart Davis-Monthan AFB only to find that someone stole our portable Honda generator sometime in the night.  How frustrating!  We try to stay at military bases because they are so secure and there are so many other retired military folks that it always feels like being among family.  It's hard to believe that one of our own did this.  The security police and park staff said there hadn't been a theft in the park for many years.  There are many generators sitting out 24 hours a day in the overflow areas and I've not yet seen one that was secured.  An expensive lesson learned....

After getting the police report for our records we dumped tanks, aired tires, refilled propane tanks and departed the base around 10am.   Our original plan was to go only as far as the Phoenix area to spend the night so we could meet Brad and Jo for dinner and then start for Ehrenberg in the morning.  Big problem:  The weather forecasts for tomorrow includes high winds across our travel path which I really want to avoid when towing the 5er.  I called Colorado River Oasis and changed our reservation to allow us to arrive today instead of tomorrow so we can be parked before the wind hits.  We then called Brad hoping to meet them for lunch as we pass through the Phoenix area rather than dinner but that part didn't work.  During our phone conversation with Brad, and after I suffered considerable verbal abuse from him, we hatched a plan to connect up sometime in early or middle March when they plan to be in the Lake Havasu City area.  At that time we hope to be in Las Vegas but we should be able to get connected somehow.  I'm not sure why I so readily avail myself to his insults - anyone who knows me at all knows that I'd never insult a friend the way he does.

Anyway, we arrived in Ehrenberg around 3:30pm with plenty of time to check in and get set up before dinner time.  We bought a really good Greek style Pizza from a mobile vendor in the park just a short walk from our trailer. While eating I felt sorry for Brad knowing that he had counted on getting to spend time with me and was now having to eat dinner without my company.  I hope he gets over that without too much pain.  In the meantime we'll enjoy what will hopefully be an insult free stay here for the next few days before moving North to Emerald Cove Resort across the Colorado River from Parker, AZ.  DRW
